Department Information, Job Summary and Essential Job Functions NOTE:The normal starting salary for this position is $18.35/hourly. A higher salary may be considered, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant and/or the City's step placement policy. NOTE: Employees assigned to the Airports Department must successfully pass a thorough TSA background check including fingerprinting. Please read the Airports Department Notice of Criminal History Records Check and Criminal History Records Checklist available at the following link: https://www.okc.gov/Home/ShowDocument?id=19935 This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., 427.1 et seq.,(OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license. Full-time employees will receive preference in the following order: major division first, then department, and then all other full-time City employees. If it is determined that no qualified full-time City employees exist, qualified part-time employees and external applicants will be considered. This classification is located in various departments throughout the City of Oklahoma City. This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Building Maintenance Sectionwithin the Airports Departmentand is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. However, an eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies in the department, per provisions of the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. Employees in this classification must possess skills, knowledge and abilities associated with operating, maintaining, inspecting, cleaning, and making adjustments to various types of air handling and heating systems prior to assuming the position. Essential job functions include: inspecting, servicing, maintaining and repairing steam heating, air conditioning and ventilating systems; completing work orders, safety reports, inspection sheets and other related reports and forms on a daily basis; and maintaining building facilities. Supervision is of a limited nature and the worker must assume responsibility for work performed. The Building Maintenance Mechanic I has frequent contact with City personnel and the public to answer questions about work being performed or to refer individuals to appropriate departmental personnel. VETERANS PREFERENCE Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City shall receive five (5) points added to the passing score on an initial selection process. Qualified applicants must upload a copy of their DD Form 214 or NGB Form 22 indicating discharge type/character of service at the time of application. Job Requirements * Knowledge of air conditioning and heating system operation. * Skill in safe operation of electrical tools and equipment. * Skill in maintaining heating and cooling systems. * Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. * Ability to work independently. * Ability to maintain quality workmanship standards for duration of project. * Ability to keep accurate records. * Ability to perform building maintenance tasks. * Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. * Ability to follow oral and written instructions. * Willingness to follow safety practices in performance of tasks. * Willingness to follow established City and departmental policies, procedures, codes, and regulations. * Possession of a valid State of Oklahoma Class I Boiler Operator License (positions located in the General Services Department require a State of Oklahoma Class II Boiler Operator License). * Possession of a valid driver license (Operator). NOTE: General Services Department employees will be required to possess or obtain a valid State of Oklahoma Class II Boiler Operator License within six (6) months from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining a valid State of Oklahoma Class II Boiler Operator License within six (6) months from the date of hire/promotion/transfer/demotion. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements WORKING CONDITIONS * Primarily inside, occasionally outside, exposed to heat, cold, humidity, etc. * Exposed to high humidity in the boiler rooms. * Exposed to temperature changes of 20 degrees to 30 degrees or more when going from boiler room or chiller to another location. * Possibility of injuries such as sprains, fractures, deep cuts, etc. when repairing systems and operating machinery and equipment such as welding torches, grinders, air hammers, table drills, pumps, motors, etc. * Occasional work with ladders, scaffolding, platforms, etc., 12 feet or more above floor or ground level. * Exposed to steady and fairly loud noises from machinery and equipment such as chillers, air conditioning units, boilers, pumps, motors, etc. * Exposed to large amounts of dust when performing tasks such as changing filters, operating grinding machine, cleaning air handling unit parts, etc. * Occasional to frequent exposure to chemical irritants such as cleaning solvents, chemicals used to balance the water in air handling and heating machinery, etc. * Subject to 24-hour emergency call, including weekends and holidays. * Frequent local area travel to make repairs at different buildings and to pick up parts, etc. WORKING CONDITIONS- GENERAL SERVICES * Possibility of second, third or fourth degree burns from steam heat of high-pressure boiler (steam is around 325 degrees). * Subject to working on or near equipment which under certain conditions may explode, such as when operating a high-pressure boiler at 60 pounds. NOTE: Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, working hours vary (may require work to begin before 8:00 a.m. and/or end beyond 5:00 p.m., and/or may require work on weekends and holidays), and are subject to change, based on the duties and location of the position and the business needs of the assigned work unit/department. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS * Strength enough to lift, push, pull or carry objects weighing up to 75 pounds such as drums or barrels of chemicals, parts, and pieces of equipment, etc. * Flexibility enough to bend, twist, and reach out to perform duties such as maintenance and repair on air handling and heating systems. * Balance enough to work from ladders, platforms, catwalks, etc. * Extreme arm-hand steadiness, manual dexterity, and finger dexterity enough to perform maintenance and repair tasks on air handling and heating systems. * Near vision enough to read various items such as wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints, part numbers, etc., and to work on small parts and wires. * Visual color discrimination enough to perform tasks such as accurately matching color-coded wires etc. and determining different colors and hues when performing chemical tests of water in the air handling and heating systems. * Hearing enough to distinguish location of malfunction in items such as machinery and equipment. * Hearing and speech enough to communicate clearly and distinctly via two-way radio or in person. Other Notes NOTE:Employees assigned to the Department of Airports must successfully pass a thorough TSA background check, including fingerprinting. NOTE: An eligibility list will be established from this posting consisting of applicants who receive a score of 70 percent or better. Multiple selection procedures may be utilized; a minimum of 70 percent or better will be required on each; and the results of multiple selection procedures will be equally weighted. The eligibility list will be in effect for 180 days from the date of the final selection procedure and will be used to fill future vacancies. NOTE: City employees are required to receive pay electronically, either via direct deposit or pay card. NOTE: Full-time employees on the Interdepartmental lateral transfer/voluntary demotion list who are interested in this position must submit an application through the standard process. NOTE: Upon a conditional offer and acceptance of employment, the City of Oklahoma City will conduct a background investigation/verification.
