Department Information, Job Summary and Essential Job Functions

NOTE:The normal starting salary for this position is $15.68/hourly. A higher salary may be considered, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant and/or the City's step placement policy.

Full-time City employees will receive preference in the following order: major division first, then department, then all other full-time City employees. Part-time/year-round City employees will receive preference next. If there are no qualified full-time City employees or part-time/year-round City employees, external applicants will then be considered.

This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., 427.1 et seq.,(OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.

This classification is located in various departments throughout the City of Oklahoma City. This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Streets, Traffic, and Drainage Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. However, an eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies, including vacancies in other departments, per provisions of the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. The purpose of this classification is to serve as a member of a crew, averaging two to four persons and/or to work independently to provide general and semi-skilled labor for construction, maintenance, and repair projects. As crewmembers, the employees work in close proximity to one another to complete jobs requiring a cooperative effort. Workers in this classification will also independently use knowledge and skills acquired previously on the job. Essential job functions include: performing general and/or semi-skilled labor associated with construction, maintenance, or repair activities; operating a variety of power and hand tools; operating heavy power tools and equipment requiring basic skill and training, such as jackhammers, concrete saws, truck-mounted cranes, etc.; preparing and assembling materials, tools, and equipment for transport to and from work sites; assisting co-workers as needed in a cooperative manner; and performing related duties as required and assigned. Employees in this classification must follow safety regulations and procedures at all times. The work may involve minimal contact with the public to answer questions concerning the crew's function, with a supervisor present to respond to unusual questions. The employee typically works under close supervision but may complete routine tasks independently upon receiving verbal instructions from an immediate supervisor.

Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference. To receive preference, veterans must submit verification of honorable discharge from the United States military service (Department of Defense Form DD214 or NGB Form 22) prior to the closing date of the vacancy announcement.
