Overview:

 

Responding to the healing mission of Jesus and the tradition of Catherine McAuley to serve the poor and sick person, we participate in meeting the health needs of the community. Pastoral Services assists the patient, family and personnel in meeting their spiritual, social, and emotional needs during a time of illness, injury or stress and will minister to all persons, regardless of their belief system. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education:

Masters-level work in Theology, Ministry, Counseling, Divinity, or equivalence in related field.

Sufficient units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) for Board Certification as recognized by Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) or Neshama:  Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC).


Experience:

Two years of health care chaplaincy experience (may include CPE experience).


Certifications:

Eligible for certification as Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) by APC, NACC or NAJC and commitment to obtain Board Certification within 2 years OR equivalent healthcare chaplaincy experience including experience training for Catholic-related ministries.


Other Skills and Knowledge:

  • Compassion and respect the dignity of each person regardless of their cultural, religious, lifestyle choices or age.
  • Good communication and listening skills and able to be present to others.
  • Ability to minister to the whole person with an emphasis on the spiritual.
  • Ability to be self-reflective about work.
  • Responds with respect, graciousness, kindness and spiritual comfort.
  • Ability to work independently in the context of a strong team and in  cooperation with the interdisciplinary clinical team to provide quality services resulting in high patient satisfaction.
  • Able to work in emotional and stressful situations.
  • Advocates for patient, family member or co-worker when the need arises.
  • Ability to work in crisis and trauma situations and with multiple priorities.
  • Uses computer systems, pagers, and telephone systems effectively.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of, sensitivity to, and respect for various religions.
  • Ability to train and coordinate Pastoral Services volunteers for assistance in screening patients, providing welcome visits, sacramental ministry, and enhanced community engagement.
  • Able to be a self-starter, work with high degree of initiative, and also participate in teams within and beyond the department.
  • Function as subject matter expert and trusted resource for interdisciplinary team in matters of general spiritual care


Preferred Education:

Master’s Degree in Theology, Ministry, Counseling, Divinity, or equivalence in related field.

Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) recognized by Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) or Neshama:  Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC).

 

Preferred Experience: 

Depending on local needs, any of the following could be preferred for a Board Certified Chaplain:

  • Experience with specialty area
  • Four (4) years of chaplain experience.
  • Presenting to physicians/other clinicians.

May prefer Catholic

May prefer experience with spiritual care in the ambulatory setting

May prefer experience with spiritual care in the virtual setting

 

Preferred Certification/Registration:

Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) by APC, NACC or NAJC.

 

Preferred Other Skills and Knowledge:

  • Where needed, language skills or experience with specific patient groups served.
  • Ability to teach, present, coach, and mentor others.
  • Able to effectively assess patient’s spiritual needs and document a clear Spiritual Care Plan in the patient’s chart
  • Able to educate interdisciplinary team around their role in providing basic spiritual care or focused spiritual sensitivity to patients
  • Function as subject matter expert and trusted resource for interdisciplinary team in matters of specialized spiritual care
  • Adept provision of spiritual care across multiple mediums of delivery (e.g. face-to-face, telephone, e-chaplaincy, and/or virtual)
