DIETITIAN 1-3 BILINGUAL OKC-County Health Dept. www.occhd.org AA/EOE SUMMARY: This position is located in the Communications and Outreach Division with the Oklahoma City-County Health Department (OCCHD). The employee is responsible for providing nutritional education to clients, in both English and Spanish, through the preparation and presentation of formal classes, individual counseling and consultation. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:This is a summary of the duties and responsibilities commonly found within this classification. All employees must maintain a commitment to the OCCHD's mission, vision and strategic goals. This summary is not meant to be all-inclusive, thus, other related activities or tasks may be assigned. This position functions at the entry level (Tier 1) as defined by the Council on Linkages Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals with a primary focus on the following domains: Communication Skills Community Dimensions of Practice Skills Cultural Competency Skills ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Lead hour long group sessions to large groups (approximately 50 people) both in person and online over nutrition education, physical activity and behavior change topics in both English and Spanish. 2. Counsel individuals and groups on basic rules of good nutrition, healthy eating habits, and self management to improving their quality of life in both English and Spanish. 3. Assess health needs, diet restrictions, and current health plans to provide self management counseling. 4. Perform medical tests such as finger stick, blood pressure, height, weight, and other measurements to assess health status. 5. Follow guidelines when using medical assessment, client history and risks to educate client about their health and make referrals. 6. Refer clients to additional agencies or programs as needed 7. Assist with providing nutrition consultation, in-service education, and training to other health professionals. 8. Communicates with other departments and external partners to present health education activities and materials after assessing their needs. 9. Assists with planning and presenting general health promotional speeches, lectures, workshops, and demonstrations using various audio/visual equipment both in person and online in both English and Spanish. 10. Perform written and oral translation from English to Spanish and Spanish to English using proper grammar and punctuation. 11. Represents OCCHD at health fairs, conferences, schools, and other places of public gatherings. 12. Ability to make recommendations to clients and their families related to dietary plans and lifestyle modification, food selection and preparation. 13. Assist with preparing manuals, visual aids, course outlines, and other materials used in teaching. 14. Assist with planning training programs for topics such as chronic disease management and prevention, nutrition, lifestyle medication, physical activity, weight loss, and life skills to prevent disease. 15. Collaborates with health specialists and civic groups to determine community health needs and the availability of services. 16. Position requires regularly working one evening per week with occasional additional evenings and/or weekends. Time is adjusted to maintain standard 40-hour work week. 17. Maintains appropriate confidentiality and follows agency guidelines and statutory regulations regarding the release of client or agency information. 18. Assist with the recruitment, training, and evaluation of volunteers. 19. Travel to off-site locations to perform job duties as needed. 20. Completes required training in support of duties and responsibilities of this position. 21. At the direction of OCCHD Executive Director or designee, the incumbent will be assigned a variety of specific job duties and responsibilities as a member of the OCCHD Emergency Preparedness and Response Program Team, (i.e. Bioterrorism Response Program). Also, as a member of the Emergency Preparedness and Response Program Team, the employee is required to complete all necessary emergency responder training and may be designated as a member of the first-responder team. 22. In accordance with our designation of a PHAB Accredited health department and explicit commitment to a culture of continuous quality improvement, employees will receive Quality Improvement (QI) training deemed necessary by their supervisor. QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: -Bachelor's or Master's degree -Registered Dietitian and Licensure from the State of Oklahoma -Ability to translate English to Spanish and Spanish to English verbally and in writing -Experience with a virtual coaching platform is preferred -Valid Oklahoma driver license required -Certified in CPR LEVEL 1 - no experience required, pay grade 13, $1,930 semi-monthly LEVEL 2 - one year of experience required, pay grade 14, $2,086 semi-monthly LEVEL 3 - two years of experience required, pay grade 15, $2,252 semi-monthly SKILLS AND ABILITIES: -Knowledge of providing nutrition education, counseling and consultation -Knowledge of current dietetics and institutional diet management -Skill in communicating with persons of diverse backgrounds both orally and in writing using tact and diplomacy in both English and Spanish -Skill in developing and presenting nutrition education materials both in person and online -Ability and willingness to perform finger-sticks and weigh and measure people -Ability and willingness to maintain confidentiality -Ability and willingness to operate a personal computer Ability and willingness to utilize diverse modes of communication (face to face, texting, phone calls, video chats, online discussion board, etc.) -Ability and willingness to operate various virtual platforms and remotely connect to program participants -Ability and willingness to follow established policies and procedures -Ability and willingness to develop and maintain effective working relationships -Ability and willingness to follow safe working practices and procedures -Ability and willingness to assume responsibility for work product WORKING CONDITIONS: -Primarily indoors in climate-controlled building -No smoking or use of non-smoking tobacco products is allowed at anytime while conducting agency business or in agency vehicles -No use of cell phones or the use of electronic wireless communications devices used to write, send or read a text-based communication while driving a motor vehicle on agency business -May be subject to occasional standing for extended periods -Regular travel to off-site clinics -Periodically exposed to glare from computer monitor -OSHA category: performs tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: -Arm/hand steadiness and digital dexterity enough to use equipment such as computer keyboard, ten-key, lancet, etc. -Vision enough to read and draft written communications such as computer printouts, instructions, hand- or machine-generated documents, etc., as well as print on computer monitor -Flexibility and coordination enough to operate a motor vehicle as needed -Speech and hearing enough to communicate with others via telephone, in a public presentation and face-to-face -Flexibility and strength enough to lift objects weighing up to 35 pounds, and move and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 35 pounds -Flexibility enough to bend over exam table, stoop to pick up objects from floor etc. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: This position requires constant contact with other employees and with the public to give and receive information and/or to provide technical assistance. The employee may be required to occasionally deal with hostile persons. SUPERVISION GIVEN AND RECEIVED/ACCOUNTABILITY: This employee is under the supervision of an immediate supervisor. Work product is subject to both specific and general review. The incumbent has no responsibility for supervision. Although this position has no direct accountability for purchasing materials, the employee may make recommendations which result in the expenditure of significant funds. The employee is responsible for receiving gift cards and other incentive items, accountable for keeping them in a secure location and documenting their distribution to the appropriate person. The incumbent is accountable for program equipment and materials.
