Sonographer - GYN - (Sonography - Sono)

Overview:Under the direction of the Ultrasound Supervisor and/or
Radiologist, performs all types of ultrasound, and non-invasive
vascular procedures utilizing independent judgement and initiative.
Safety/Risk Management:Locates and properly operates oxygen,
suction, blood pressure and other essential patient care
equipment.Consistently observes patients before, during and after
procedures, making and using appropriate immobilization
devices.Appropriately transfers patients to/from stretchers,
wheelchairs and on/off procedure table, giving care to IV's and
other appliances.Safely operates all equipment and immediately
reports malfunctions, being able to locate all emergency switches,
and consistently understanding of emergency procedures and
radiation safety.Assures that all data entered/ retrieved from
physician's orders and/or computer system is accurate, verifying
accuracy prior to procedure. Coordination of Services:Reviews
orders for diagnosis and prescriptions, appropriately scheduling
patient and department resources for services.Performs all
procedures according to protocol stated in procedure manual, unless
directed otherwise by radiologist/physician, presenting completed
procedure to radiologist/ physician for interpretation.Collaborates
with staff members and physicians to assure delivery of optimal
patient care at all times, consistently demonstrating ability to
revise department schedule and staff assignments to meet patient
and physician needs and maintain a smooth functioning department
with limited rooms and equipment.Assumes responsibility for
portions of quality improvement program, understanding all phases,
and keeping all documentation current and available, following
through with any problem areas.Assists in department orientation
program as needed, assuming responsibility of training new staff,
and assisting staff members in keeping orientation program up to
date, contributing to development of educational needs of support
staff and/or students.Evaluates diagnostic procedure for
appropriateness, taking corrective measures if needed, and
screening for previous procedures. Complex Aspects:Provides
diagnostic sonograms with the ability to recognize structures
visualized.Assists radiologist/physician in ultrasound
interventional guided procedures along with providing essential
patient care.Able to transmit images and troubleshoot PACS system.
Basic Aspects:Greets patients by name, introduces self; provides
patients with thorough explanation of procedures, efficiently
performs procedure, and uses good judgment with add-on cases to
meet patient needs and department needs without disrupting
schedule.Understands safe and proper machine operation, maintaining
working knowledge of machine emergency procedures and radiation
safety procedures, reviewing as needed or at least
yearly.Demonstrates technical proficiency in producing diagnostic
images with the ability to recognize abnormalities, obtaining the
appropriate images for each procedure, and positioning patients
according to department protocol.Prepares and stocks rooms for
various exams, checks equipment between patients; orders supplies
as needed, and cleans room and equipment between patients,
including patient waiting area.Effectively alters routine
procedures when patient condition indicates, making appropriate
changes on requisitions, submitting exams timely, and completing
charges appropriately and correctly.Assists in the transportation
of patients/specimens/supplies and any other needs of the
department.Works fair share of on-call, holidays, and covering
vacations, remaining willing to adjust personal schedule in case of
fluctuations in workload or departmental need, and displaying
flexibility by willingly working in any area or changing scheduled
work hours.Maintains alignment with ETO policy, clocking in and out
at scheduled time, no earlier than six minutes before/after
scheduled shift, eliminating (when possible) overtime on a weekly
basis. Communication Management:Routinely questions patient/family
members before a procedure to obtain pertinent patient
history.Monitors equipment operation and alerts appropriate
personnel of any problems in a timely manner.Keeps manager and
supervisor informed of any issues, problems or situations requiring
attention or follow up.Recognizes the need to assist other staff
members during the busy times throughout the day, asking what needs
to be done and readily volunteering in other areas including
office, scheduling, etc.Shares all relevant information at end of
shift, reporting both verbally and written when both are
possible.Assures all communications regarding patient care are
timely and appropriate, recognizing patient crises and initiates
appropriate measures. Technology:Understands applications and
effectively uses hospital and department computer systems.Enters
saves prints and retrieves information from systems; uses barcodes
to improve efficiency and accuracy, ensuring that all procedure
charges are properly entered/revised in system and/or submitted to
appropriate person throughout shift.Performs equipment quality
control testing as required.Maintains working knowledge of new
technology, accepting responsibility for keeping informed of
current department practices.Initiates appropriate downtime
