In this product manager role, you will be accountable for driving the development of the Heartland Payroll product to support client users in the small-to-medium business segment. Coordinating with other vertical product managers you'll drive solutions that meet our clients' human capital management needs, so they can focus on the businesses they love.
Developing an awareness of market problems to be solved, you'll collaboratively assess the validity, viability, and value of incoming requests and planned work. You'll wear many hats: responsible for products from ideation and design through development and testing cycles, launch, and ongoing maintenance and analysis. As a successful candidate you will think and work tactically, yet be able to step back and see the big picture as the owner of Payroll Product strategy for third-party integrations.
Our teams are widely distributed, so you must be skilled at remote team-building and communication. You can choose to work from a Heartland office or from home, wherever you are most productive and comfortable, and occasional travel will be required.
Duties

  • Develop and execute a data-driven Payroll Product strategy for the assigned area.
  • Become an expert in the needs of our market segment and the competitive landscape.
  • Evaluate incoming requests for strategic fit, client impact, depth of investment, and other factors.
  • Prioritize work to deliver maximum value.
  • Determine requirements and ensure that user stories, specifications, and tasks are aligned to lead to a complete feature or product.
  • Act as the Product Owner in a scrum team, prioritizing the backlog and providing SME insight during each sprint.
  • Advocate for the strategy of assigned modules through development, testing, and release.
  • Track progress and proactively communicate delays or obstructions, working cooperatively to find solutions.
  • Coordinate with many internal teams -- including Operations, Product Support, Compliance, Training, Development, Testing, Sales, Business Development, and Marketing -- and potentially with partners to create solutions and launch new products.
  • Participate in building a strong product team, sharing information, collaborating, offering support, and contributing to everyone's professional growth.
  • Analyze manual Product Support tasks to find and execute more efficient technical solutions.
  • Create and maintain necessary documentation.
  • Review launched features on an ongoing basis, seeking opportunities for improvement.
    Required Qualifications:
    • 2+ years working in software product management, project management, or a closely related position.
    • 2+ years experience in HR related software.
    • Self-driven desire to solve problems, approaching them with curiosity and positivity.
    • Understanding of Agile methodology, particularly using scrum.
    • Strong business analysis and critical thinking skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and appropriately with all levels of an organization and with partners.
    • Comfort presenting complex topics to stakeholders with varied technical knowledge.
    • Ability to see overall strategy while executing tactically and with attention to detail.
    • Experience coordinating with geographically dispersed team members.
    • Eagerness to learn new products and the flexibility to adapt to changing processes.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and G-Suite products.
      Preferred Qualifications:
      • Bachelor's degree in a field that has contributed to current skills.
      • 3-5 years of product management experience.
      • Awareness of UI & UX issues for consumer and/or internal web products.
      • Background in the payroll or small business services industry.
